Cultural Isolation: Immigrating to the United States and experiencing a new culture brings unique challenges. Do you have these thoughts?
I don’t fit in
I'm struggling with work expectations and communication
I miss my family and friends back home
I’m struggling financially more than I anticipated
I don’t want to disappoint my family back home
If you experience any of these thoughts or feelings, I can be of help. I understand the immigrant experience as an immigrant myself and I want to learn more about your own experiences to help you adapt to life in the United States.
Life Transitions: Adjusting to change can be stressful, overwhelming and leave you feeling lost, insecure and anxious.
Do you feel unprepared to manage these changes?
Starting college or life post-graduation
Getting married
Separation or divorce
Moving
New job or promotion
In therapy, we will learn why adjusting to these changes is causing you distress. I can teach you coping skills to manage and alleviate the anxiety and uncertainty that accompany change so that you can move forward and continue to build your life.
Depression: It manifests differently in each person and in varying degrees, affecting how people feel about themselves and those around them.
Do you feel:
Sadness
Loss of motivation
Social isolation
Low self-esteem
Guilt
Angry or agitated
Less pleasure in social activities
If you said yes to one or more thought or feeling, I can help you to identify underlying issues that contribute to the challenges that you face. Together, we can find ways to alleviate sadness to allow you to re-engage with yourself and the world around you.
Anxiety: Most people experience some level of anxiety in their lives, but frequent anxiety can be uncomfortable and lead to avoidant behaviors which result in missing opportunities and life experiences. I can help you change that.
Do you struggle with:
Excessive worry about yourself and loved ones
Wanting things to be “perfect?”
Fear of losing control
Difficulty confronting others and expressing your thoughts
Avoiding people and places
Feel overwhelmed and self-conscious in public?
In therapy, we will identify anxiety triggers and underlying reasons that anxiety surfaces by identifying your thoughts and feelings in those moments. You will learn and utilize new strategies to reduce anxiety, its intensity and its frequency.
Trauma: Experiencing trauma creates a disruption in a person’s life - their sense of self and how they relate to the world can become severely compromised which negatively affects daily life.
As a trauma survivor, do you:
Blame yourself for what happened
Feel ashamed and guilty
Feel stuck in the time and place of the trauma
Find it difficult to plan your future
Have recurring dreams
Experience physical discomfort like headaches, back pain or stomach aches
Suffer from low self-esteem
Many people struggle to redefine their lives post-trauma. My goal for survivors of traumatic events is to work together to understand what the meaning of the trauma is, and what burdens, thoughts and feelings you, as a survivor, carry with you that affect your mood, self view, sense of safety and overall daily functioning. Ultimately, my hope for you is to be free of guilt and self-blame and to see survival as a strength.
